Thursday 5th September. A lovely , warm, quiet , autumn day and a joy to be in the woods. Watering cans are out in force trying to save our young trees , quite a few of which are showing signs of drying leaves due to lack of water.Rain is expected tomorrow but it will be too little , too late after another very dry spell.
Ellie and I did a litter pick today. After the children go back to school there is always plenty to find.
Also, I just wish dog-walkers would put their used doggy bags in the bin provided and not in the hedges! Most are responsible people but some are still leaving the waste behind where it is trodden in by us workers and other walkers. PLEASE clear it up!
Dick and Colin have replaced the supports of two of our bird tables which were rotten and Martin is still doing a sterling job of feeding our bird population every day.
We still have some lengths of boardwalk to do in Foxborough wood but we are out on a day trip next week and then there is Teddy bear fun day to prepare for.
We have cleared some areas ready for teddy rides and laid fresh chippings ,also trimmed back some undergrowth from main paths ready for the influx of Teddies.
19th of September and we have spent a lovely morning clearing the hay from our wild flower meadow and using it to provide winter quarters for hedgehogs and any other creature seeking refuge. The railway line has been strimmed again and work has started to clear burr reeds from the top pond on the nature reserve.
The "heavy gang" have errected a lovely fence around the end of the stream where it goes into the culvert at the bottom end of Gainsborough Drive for safety reasons.
We have cleared up the hedge trimmings from the wild flower meadow after David had trimmed the hedge and cleared around Freeman`s bridge, where it was becoming very over-grown.
Barry has been keeping the wildlife pond in the wood clear of duckweed and cutting back the vegetation around it.
Our Autumn trip out was to the museum of rural life in Stowmarket after we had stopped at the garden centre for coffee and scones and also some shopping!
There was lots to see there , a working water mill, some old cottages as they were in times gone by, a lovely house to walk around and acres of grounds to explore. There were two Suffolk punch horses out in a meadow and plenty of animals to see. In some large sheds there were lots of old utensils and various machines from a bygone era, did we actually use things like that?
I heard plenty of folk saying "my mother had one of those" or "I remember seeing that in a shop".
I think every one enjoyed the day, a place well worth a visit.
We have just received another award! We were runners-up in an Octavia Hill group competition.
It was a nation-wide competition to find individuals or groups who are helping to safeguard the environment and ,from more than 140 entries , we were selected in the green guardian section.
Another framed certificate to add to our growing collection of accolades so Gunton Woodland Workers , give yourselves a pat on the back!
