Thursday 10th October. I am so glad I went for a walk in the woods yesterday in warm autumn sunshine, what a change today!. Strong winds and heavy squally showers meant our work party was cancelled. This does not often happen but when it does I get withdrawal symptoms from not being amongst the trees!
Thursday 17th October. A nice big pile of chippings to work with today, I think David meant to keep us busy while he was soaking up the sunshine. We first had to rake off the fallen leaves before we could spread the chippings, then we got stuck in and moved a good bit of the heap before coffee break.
There were some dead trees to be felled and the wood was used to continue doing the path edgings.
There was work to be done clearing around Freemans bridge so a party of ladies went down to tackle that and Betty nearly fell in!.
A group of men went on to the nature reserve to tackle the menace of the rushes filling the pond again and in their well-fitting wet suits looked as though they were in baby grows . I must not make fun, they are doing a really good, muddy, job and I know they love getting stuck in.
After the storm on Monday there were trees which had come down and these had to be cleared. A fairly small beech was down in the main wood and at least three trees had to be cleared from the wild-flower meadow area. There were also about eight trees down on the main path towards Pleasurewood Hills and these also had to be cleared as they were making it difficult for walkers to get by. As I have said before, nothing is wasted, all the wood will be used somewhere in the wood
so thanks to our chain-saw gang for clearing up. It really was quite a storm but I think we were luckier than a lot of areas further South which bore the brunt of the weather.
A bird table was also blown over but this has to wait to be repaired until the rushes have been cleared from the pond.
Well, most of the leaves are now off the trees with the exception of the Oak, they are last to shed their leaves, and the profusion of berries is apparent ready for the hungry birds and everything is preparing to face the winter but we still find plenty to keep us busy and we have one more outing to look forward to.
