We had a long work-list today but we also had a really good turn-out of workers ready to get stuck in. Earlier this week we had a Fire Engine in the wood to put out a fire in the “pit”. However, they drove all the way to the end of the main path before reversing back to the “pit” and then reversing back to the main gate. In doing so they did a little damage to the surface of the new path covering. Some of the guys went down the main path with rakes, spades and the “whacker” to repair the damage and did an excellent job. Waveney Norse had been reducing the height of trees near the dog bin and had left us with lots of good size logs. These were moved to the path opposite, using the tractor & trailer and the trolley dolly, and used for path edging. Some of the smaller branches were stored for later use. The old rotten edging was later carried down to the copse near the B&B area and used to make a log pile. The recently planted trees in the copse had their plastic ties replaced with string which will decompose over time – David Attenborough would be most impressed! The copse will soon be fenced off as we had people camping in there last summer. The painting of the notice boards continued and they have now all had a first coat. They needed rubbing down with a wire brush before painting. The splitting of the snowdrops continued and there was also digging up of alexanders which we must keep under control. Some of the men went to the pond to continue the fence work. They cut the trunk of a willow near the Stubbs Wood entrance and used this as stakes in the fence. We hope the willow stakes will root and help our “living” fence.
With coffee today we had a lovely selection of cakes from Marion, to celebrate the first Thursday this week!
At “listen up” David thanked Marion for the cakes and then handed over to Janet who gave the team a Health & Safety chat on how to and how not to carry and leave tools when not in use. A good reminder to us all. Then John spoke about the Special General Meeting that we will have at coffee time on Thurs May 10th. This will be to vote on amendments to the Constitution to allow the position of Honorary President. There was also a brief discussion about the possibility of a GWCP long weekend away next May. The workers have been asked to vote on this and so far the numbers are in favour of a trip. David gave out final instructions for this year’s trip on Monday and checked if everyone knew where they were parking.
