Today it was overcast skies but no rain. There was slight wind which made it feel a little cold. So everyone kept busy to keep warm. The main task today was chipping and we had several wheelbarrows out and the tractor with two trailers. Whilst one was delivering the other was being loaded. This worked for the first load but the large trailer was then to heavy to lift onto the tow hook. The small trailer has had a new connection hook fitted but this jumped off several times so a wire was attached to keep it connected. Another job for the next week is to arrange for a different attachment to be made. We used all the chippings so some more will be requested from WN. The fencing gang went to Moore’s Lane to repair the fence along the Secret-Garden. This job was finished. They then repaired the picnic table leg, the table now needs to be moved back to Church Wood. Work on the new north boundary to Moore’s Lane continued. It is nearly ready for Oak trees to be planted and Willow cuttings placed in the boundary to form a live hedge. The spoils from the main hedge cutting were cleared away, using some of them as inserts into the hedge to thicken it up. The remaining daffodils and crocus bulbs were planted in discreet places around the new hedge areas.
With coffee today we had various lovely homemade cakes and hot sausage / cheese rolls which were kindly provided by Andrea and Paul. A group of nursery children, with careers, surprised us by presenting us with a box of lovely gluten free chocolate brownies. Made by the children as a thank you to us because they enjoy Gunton Wood.
David then talked about the trip to Snape and how everyone enjoyed it. He learnt from the booking office that tickets were already on sale for next year’s show so he reserved seats for the show on 7th December 2019. He also said that the summer trip was being discussed by the committee ant it could be the Vicarage Gardens at East Ruston with a pub lunch at the Butchers Arms. A date in early July 2019 is looking most likely. David mentioned there would be a workparty this Saturday in Gunton Wood, another 3 trees will be felled.
I forgot to mention that last week we had a brand new wheelbarrow and long-handled shovel donated to us from one of the dog walkers in the wood. I believe they actually came all the way from Romania!
